3M AND HINO WORK TOWARDS BETTER VISIBILITY
Hino Australia supported a 3M safety demonstration held over two nights in Sydney to highlight the benefits of 3M Diamond Grade reflective tapes, which are delivering highly cost-effective safety improvements for truck owners.
Two Hino 700 Series prime movers and a 13-metre semi-trailer were fitted with the 3M reflective tape for the demonstration held at Honda's driver training facility in St Ives.
Federal, state and local government representatives, transport executives, safety personnel, and both emergency and private fleet owners attended the demonstration.
Hino Australia divisional manager Alex Stewart and national government sales manager Tom Ayrton said they were pleased to work with 3M on this safety initiative.
The use of partial or full contour reflective markings is mandatory on all heavy vehicles in the European Union from this month under changes to the UN/ECE104 regulation.
A leading university study in Germany found that more than 95 per cent of night time accidents from the rear or side of a truck could be reduced by using outline vehicle visibility markings1.
A truck with outline reflective markings is recognised earlier than an unmarked truck because they help to define the total size of the truck for drivers. This gives other drivers more time to manoeuvre safely in traffic2.
It has also been proven that a truck which is retrofitted with outline reflective markings can reduce rear-end collisions by up to 41 per cent and side collisions by up to 37 per cent3.
The average financial loss per truck incident (vehicle damage and repair costs only) for fleet owners in Australia is close to $128,480*, not taking into account the significant emotional trauma and devastation that accidents can have on families and loved ones.
3M Diamond Grade 983 and 987 Series reflective tapes are used worldwide for truck markings. They deliver outstanding truck visibility and continuous protection 24 hours a day, especially when trucks or trailers are parked on the side of the road.
3M senior product manager Cade Turner said the night time demonstrations had been very effective because they gave decision-makers a hands-on opportunity to really test the visibility for themselves.
He said the 3M Diamond Grade tape is also quick and easy to apply, offering a cost-effective safety solution.
